A practical support base for homelessness outreach workers and front line workers to exchange ideas and share their experiences of working with homeless clients and rough sleepers.
The Spike needs YOU!
Thank you to everyone who has contributed so far. For anyone unsure about adding a comment, please get involved, everyone's comments are important, whether they are to agree, disagree, or simply to add their own experiences. There will be a new discussion topics on a regular basis, so please keep returning to the site to check out changes.
This blog will grow and develop in time and I hope it will become a valuable resource for many workers, so for this to happen it needs your input.
The aims of this blog
This blog is a support base where those who deal directly with homeless clients can come for ideas, share their wealth of knowledge, exchange practical ideas, and share experinces.
The aim of this blog is to bring together outreach workers and their colleagues from a vast array of services and to pool their experience, so that we can be more effective on the front line and so inevitably help more rough sleepers and homeless clients.
Whilst I will endeavour to update this blog regularly, the success of it will ultimately be dependant on contributions from its readers.

Why THE SPIKE?
This site is called The Spike as a reminder of the age old issue of homelessness. During the 1930's workhouses were used to house homeless people (known as Transients). These workhouses were known as 'Spikes'. It was one of these Spikes that George Orwell posed as a homeless person as part of a social experiment, which formed the basis of his first book 'Down and Out in Paris and London'.
The name The Spike, serves as a reminder of how far we have come in our understanding and work with homeless people, but that we have so much more to do.
About Me
- The Outreach Worker,
- United Kingdom
- I have been working with homeless clients for 10 years in a variety of settings, day centres, care homes, hostels and as an outreach worker on the streets. I have worked in some really great teams over the years and learnt a lot from many colleagues. My aim is to recreate and share this pool of knowledge and resources for others working with homeless clients, who want to chat and maybe learn something new or share their experiences.
